What should I expect?
The first appointment is an assessment including getting to know what your goals are for counseling, a plan is made and then counseling begins. Counseling is sharing what is on your mind, your struggles with a Licensed Counselor trained in evidenced based practice and measured based care to provide you the skills to provide yourself relief, increased peace and joy!
What are the different titles in this field?
A psychiatrist prescribes medication. A psychologist specializes in additional testing and also does counseling. Licensed Mental Health Counselors provide talk therapy. Licensed Social Workers also can provide talk therapy. A Registered Mental Health Counselor Intern (RMHCI) is provisionally licensed and is under supervision of a Licensed Mental Health Counselor. At Avanti, we are Licensed Mental Health Counselors and do not currently have any Registered Mental Health Counselor Interns here at the moment.
Why is this different than talking to a friend?
A Licensed Mental Health Counselor is trained in evidenced based practices that are proven effective by research. We also used measured based care to track progress.
